The Steam Locomotive Museum In Resita

Last spring I have decided to take a trip to Bigar waterfalls which is about 160 km away from Timisoara. My plan was to drive through Resita because I wanted to visit the steam locomotive museum which is located between the old and the new part of the town, in the neighborhood called Triaj or Railroad yard in English. After almost two hours of driving I have reached the locomotive museum.

In the steam locomotive museum you can find different types of steam locomotives which were built entirely in Resita, you can even find there the first steam locomotive which was built in the Reșița locomotive factory. Also, you will find both standard and narrow gauge steam locomotives.

I will start this post with some photos of the narrow gauge locomotives found in the locomotive museum after that, you will see some standard gauge locomotives.

Resicza

This was the first steam locomotive built in Resita in 1872 and it was designed for a 948 mm gauge railway. It was used between 1872 and 1937 and it had the magical number of 2.

704.402 – Principesa Elena

The Principesa Elena was the second superheated steam locomotive of the 700 series built at the Locomotive factory in Reșița. This type of steam locomotive was in operation till 1970.

CFR 764.001

The series 764 was a very common type of steam locomotive and they were very common especially on narrow forestry railways and the CFR rail network. They were designed in order to pull various types of cargo within the areas serviced by the Narrow Railway Depot. Between 1952-1959 a total of 244 locomotives were manufactured at Reșița.

CFU 14

This tender locomotive was used especially on industrial lines. These locomotives were designed to pull heavy trains on Romania’s industrial lines. Reșița built between 1954-1961 a number of 145 steam locomotives of this series.

CFR 50.025

This was the most common standard gauge steam locomotive used by the Romanian Railway Company. They were in service till 1980 on almost all the rail lines in Romania.

CFR 142.072

This locomotive was the biggest and the most powerful in the CFR fleet. When it was operational, it managed to pull 700 tones at a speed of 110 km/h. They were constructed using the Austrian 241 model with a few improvements.

This was the biggest and largest steam locomotive produced in Romania and as far as I know, the four large wheels of the locomotive have a diameter of almost 2 meters.

CFR 150.038

This series of steam locomotives was equiped with Heusinger distribution, Knorr automated brakes, Friedmann water injector, coal-fuel combustion. This was the most basic and up to date type used by the CFR.

This steam locomotive was designed to pull fright trains on both main and secondary railway lines and it was also designed to reach a speed of 70 km/h.

CFR 131.003

This series was designed and built by some specialists in the Iron Plants Resita and Resita Domains together with the Romanian railroad company, CFR. They were built for the short secondary railway lines, especially for the railroad lines located in Banat region.

Explore Transylvania: Lake Zetea

The photos presented in this post were captured last year when I traveled with my family to the well-known historical region of Transylvania, Romania. To those who don’t know, Lake Zetea is located in Harghita county and its about 20 km away from the small Romanian town of Odorheiu Secuiesc. This large lake is an artificial lake because it was built to prevent flooding in the surrounding areas. Today, if you plan to visit the place, you will notice a small hydroelectric power plant under the dam which produces clean electricity to the local community.

After we explored this beautiful Transylvanian lake, we drove to our next objective which was the small village called Izvoarele which is a couple of kilometers down in the valley, before the lake.

Before we left the lake, I’ve decided to take multiple photos of the lake and the surrounding area and merge them into a panoramic photo. All the photos were captured from the lake’s dam because I’ve considered that place a perfect spot for making interesting panoramic photos. The most interesting element in this picture is the triangle shaped hill which is almost in the middle of the lake.

I remember that this was my first photo of the lake, I’ve shot it as soon as I arrived to the lake. You can notice that the entire lake is surrounded by large forested hills and the shore is packed with large mountain rocks.

The other side of the dam

As you can see in the photo below, the entire valley is surrounded by large forested hills. At the bottom of the dam, you can spot a white building which operates as a smaller hydroelectric power plant. This small power plant produces hydroelectricity. I have to admit that surrounding areas are really beautiful, especially the view from the dam from where, you are able to see the entire valley and its also a perfect spot for capturing many amazing landscape photos.

Close to end of the dam, I’ve found some stairs which helped me to get closer to the water. You can notice that when I shot these photos, the water level was really low.

Here is a photo which was post-processed a little bit mainly because I thought it the landscape will look much better if I give it a nice sunset look to the image. By the way, the photo below was captured on the same day as the rest of the photos of lake Zetea from this post.

Dark rainy clouds

Probably this is one of my favorite photo of the lake from that day. This is a little bit more dramatic because I wanted to give some importance to the weather as well. I remember back then, the sky was covered with some dark rainy clouds. After some shots even the rain has started and I was forced to leave the place because I didn’t want to get wet.

In conclusion, I highly recommend this places especially if you are traveling in the nearby area. In my opinion, the only perfect place the take some nice landscape shots of this place is from the dam.
