Red Lake – The Largest Natural Lake In Romania

The Red lake is about 35 km away from the small Romanian city of Ghiorgheni, so if you plan to visit the place you should know that you will have to drive on winding roads in order to get there. I bet that the entire journey won’t disappoint you because you will have the opportunity to admire the beautiful mountainous scenery. For those who don’t know, the Red lake was formed due to massive landslide which blocked a part of the valley and after that, the water started to gather in the newly created basin. That’s the history of the Red lake in a nutshell.

After we arrived next to the lake, the only thing that I didn’t liked, was the lack of parking places in the area. Probably I’m wrong, but I saw only one paid parking place right next to the main road and that place was obviously full with cars. So I had to leave my car on the edge of the main road behind other cars.

Here are some photos from my trip to the Red lake, hope you like them and also don’t forget to share them with your friends.

The Red lake or “Lacul Rosu” in Romanian, is probably the largest barrier lake which can be found in the Eastern Carpathian mountains. This lake was formed in 1837 due to a massive landslide which blocked the Bicaz Valley. The lake has received its name from the reddish alluvia deposited on the lake’s bottom. As you can see the entire lake is surrounded by amazing scenery, you will see large pine forests and some steep mountains over there. Fortunately outside was really beautiful and hot because we’ve visited this place in the summer.

Piatra Altarului mountain peak

In the background of this photo, you can see a large mountain peak surrounded by a large forest which is called in Romanian “Piatra Altarului“. This mountain is located between the Red Lake and the Bicaz canyon and you are able to see it from a considerable distance.  I’ve heard that there are a few hiking routs near the mountain and I highly recommend it especially If you love nature and photography.

Boat Ride On The Red Lake

As far as I remember, there were more then 10 boats and each boat carried between 3-5 tourists. After a couple of shots of the Red lake and the boats, the time had come to move on to our next destination which was the Bicaz canyon.
